Neck Liposuction Plastic Surgery - DefinitionNeck liposuction or neck lipoplasty is a youth-enhancing cosmetic procedure that removes excess fat from the jaw line and improves the jowl-ed appearance of face. Sometimes dieting and starvation do not help to achieve a more contoured neck, due to hereditary reasons. Neck liposuction helps there in creating a contoured neck that fits with the body. Neck Liposuction Surgery - Finding A SurgeonIn terms of finding the best possible surgeon to perform neck liposuction, sometimes a patient can ask others that have had the procedure. If this is not possible, a patient can call the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to see who regularly performs neck liposuction. And a patient can never be too careful to verify the physician’s credentials. Because liposuction is very popular, some people have tried to take advantage of limited budgets and advertised cheaper services. However, many of these ‘doctors’ are not licensed; or they may not have had the proper training to perform the proper neck liposuction procedure. These are very real things that any patient undergoing a surgical procedure should consider and research. Neck Liposuction Surgery - ConsultationAt the initial consultation for neck liposuction, the physician will examine the patient’s neck and face to determine if liposuction is the best remedy for the patient’s specific concerns. In some cases, neck liposuction will not be the best course of action, and in other cases, additional procedures may be suggested to compliment the outcome of the neck liposuction. Also, the physician will need to have the patient’s complete medical history—including conditions, medications, previous operations, etc. It is important that the patient be honest about any medical questions as the absence of honesty can lead to unnecessary complications. In this initial consultation, the physician and the patient will need to compromise on the realistic possibilities of the neck liposuction as well as the goals of the patient. In many offices, the physician will have pictures of previous procedures for the new patient to look at and see what can be expected. The Best Candidates for Neck Liposuction Surgery (Lipoplasty)There are so many benefits of neck liposuction, but to the suitable candidate. The best candidates for the neck liposuction include those that have tried dieting and exercise to lose the extra fat, but have been unsuccessful. Having a family history of the double chin feature or the jowls will also help to make a patient a good candidate. Those patients that are in good physical and mental health are also considered primes candidates for the neck liposuction surgery, as well as those that are non-smokers. If a patient is currently smoking, the physician may ask the patient to quit prior to the surgery in order to keep the healing process on track. Neck Liposuction Surgery (Lipoplasty) - ProcedureThe procedure of neck liposuction requires anesthesia for the patient — options will be discussed with the physician prior to the surgery. Most physicians opt for a light sleep sedation in which the patient is not completely ‘asleep.’ This option lessens the risk of complications associated with the anesthetic. But other physicians may choose general anesthesia or even a local, so it all depends on the extent of the procedure being done. The entire neck liposuction procedure should only take an hour to complete, depending on the extent of the patient’s case. The surgeon will then make a two to four centimeter long incision in the jaw area (exact placement of the incision is dependent on the procedure and physician preference). A wand equipped with a vacuum is then placed into the incision and moved back and forth within the incision. This motion will loosen the fat cells for removal. During the course of the neck liposuction, the surgeon will pinch the skin to determine whether or not enough fat has been removed. The incision is then closed and the entire area bandaged. Neck Liposuction Surgery (Lipoplasty) - AftercareFollowing the neck liposuction procedure, the patient will need to keep the face elevated for one to two weeks. The face will be swollen and bruised following the surgery, swelling even more in the first three days, but this is normal and will lessen over time. Oral pain medication may be prescribed to provide comfort in the first week or so following the neck liposuction. Many patients describe discomfort for up to three weeks after the surgery, depending on their healing ability. Most patients are able to return to work soon after the surgery, if their work is sedentary in nature. Following the physician’s instructions after the surgery will lessen the discomfort and any unnecessary complications. Stitches are generally removed within five to ten days of the procedure. Neck Liposuction Surgery (Lipoplasty) - Risks
Neck liposuction does present some possible risks to the patient and will be discussed prior to the operation. Asymmetry, hematoma, lumpiness, and numbness are possible. Patient dissatisfaction is always a possibility as well—of course, it is hard to determine the results of the neck liposuction when the face is so swollen. Allergic reactions to the anesthetic can also occur. Nerve damage can be permanent in some rare cases.
