Facial Liposuction Surgery

Facial Liposuction - Definition

The face is a delicate part of the body that can not be exercised or toned naturally. Facial liposuction is a modern cosmetic surgery that addresses this age-old problem. It is a measure to resolve problems with double chins, chubby cheeks and lumpy necks. Facial liposuction removes fatty deposits in specific areas of the face. The facial liposuction procedure is a sensitive surgery which involves small liposuction probes that are more discreet and cause less nerve damage.

The Need for Facial Liposuction

Facial liposuction is a youth-enhancing cosmetic procedure that is quickly becoming a popular choice among men and women alike. Some patients are genetically predisposed to carry excess fat in their jaw line, creating a jowl-ed appearance. In these cases, dieting or starvation do not help to achieve a more contoured facial appearance. Facial liposuction can help a patient have the face that fits their body.

Facial Liposuction Surgery - Finding A Surgeon

In terms of finding the best possible surgeon to perform facial liposuction, sometimes a patient can ask others that have had the procedure. If this is not possible, a patient can call the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to see who regularly performs facial liposuction procedures. And a patient can never be too careful to verify the physician’s credentials. Because liposuction is very popular, some people have tried to take advantage of limited budgets and advertised cheaper services. However, many of these ‘doctors’ are not licensed; or they may not have had the proper training to perform the proper facial liposuction procedure. This can be a significant issue that any patient undergoing a surgical procedure should consider and research.

Facial Liposuction Surgery - Consultation

At the initial consultation for facial liposuction, the physician will examine the patient’s face to determine if liposuction is the best remedy for the patient’s specific concerns. In some cases, facial liposuction will not be the best course of action, and in other cases, additional procedures may be suggested to compliment the outcome of the facial liposuction. Also, the physician will need to have the patient’s complete medical history - including conditions, medications, previous operations, etc. It is important that the patient be honest about any medical questions as the absence of honesty can lead to unnecessary complications. In this initial consultation, the physician and the patient will need to compromise on the realistic possibilities of the facial liposuction as well as the goals of the patient. In many offices, the physician will have pictures of previous procedures for the new patient to look at and see what can be expected.

Best Candidates for Facial Liposuction Surgery

The best candidates for the facial liposuction include those that have tried dieting and exercise to lose the extra fat, but have been unsuccessful. Having a family history of the double chin feature or the jowls will also help to make a patient a good candidate. Those patients that are in good physical and mental health are also considered primes candidates for the facial liposuction surgery, as well as those that are non-smokers. If a patient is currently smoking, the physician may ask the patient to quit prior to the surgery in order to keep the healing process on track.

Facial Liposuction Procedure

The procedure of facial liposuction requires anesthesia for the patient — options will be discussed with the physician prior to the surgery. Most physicians opt for a light sleep sedation in which the patient is not completely ‘asleep.’ This option lessens the risk of complications associated with the anesthetic. But other physicians may choose general anesthesia or even a local, so it all depends on the extent of the procedure being done. The entire facial liposuction procedure should only take forty five minutes to an hour to complete. The surgeon will make a two to four centimeter long incision in the jaw area (exact placement of the incision is dependent on the procedure and physician preference). A wand equipped with a vacuum is then placed into the incision and moved back and forth within the incision. This motion will loosen the fat cells for removal. During the course of the facial liposuction, the surgeon will pinch the skin to determine whether or not enough fat has been removed. The incision is then closed and the entire area bandaged.

Facial Liposuction - Aftereffects

Following the facial liposuction procedure, the patient will need to keep the face elevated for one to two weeks. The face will be swollen and bruised following the surgery, swelling even more in the first three days, but this is normal and will lessen over time. Oral pain medication may be prescribed to provide comfort in the first week or so following the facial liposuction. Many patients describe discomfort for several weeks after the surgery. Following the physician’s instructions after the surgery will lessen the discomfort and any unnecessary complications. Stitches are generally removed within five to ten days of the procedure.

Facial Liposuction - Risks

Facial liposuction does present some possible risks to the patient and will be discussed prior to the operation. Asymmetry, hematoma, lumpiness, and numbness are possible. Patient dissatisfaction is always a possibility as well — of course, it is hard to determine the results of the facial liposuction when the face is so swollen. Allergic reactions to the anesthetic can also occur. Nerve damage can be permanent in some rare cases.

Facial Liposuction - A Tribute to a Beautiful Face

The line of Beowulf - 'Face that landed thousand ships' is no more an exaggeration. Because face creates impression and sows seeds of love. And facial liposuction is a tribute to the beautiful face.
