Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty) - IntroductionNose reshaping surgery or rhinoplasty is a cosmetic plastic surgery used to improve the function (reconstructive purpose) and/or appearance (cosmetic purpose) of a person's nose. Popularly known as known as a ‘nose job’ in the surgery world, nose reshaping is a common surgical procedure to enhance the nose, the prominent feature of one’s face. Nose reshaping is a cosmetic procedure in face enhancement surgery. The Need Of Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty)Nose reshaping or rhinoplasty is a much sought after cosmetic surgery when the patient’s nose is not in compliance with the overall features of the face. A deformed nose might have resulted due to a past trauma, it might also be a congenital deformed nose. Nose reshaping can be the answer to these conditions. In other cases, the shape of the nose is making it difficult for a patient to breathe properly; and nose reshaping can help to resolve any medical problems that have resulted. Because the nose is a prominent feature on the face, nose reshaping can positively affect the overall look of a patient and help to quell any insecurity that he or she might have. Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty) – The Suitable CandidatesThe best candidates for nose reshaping include those patients who have a family history of a misshappen nose or who have had an injury that has left them with crooked features. In some cases, a congenital defect can leave a person with a nose that does not function properly and they may be good candidates for the nose reshaping. If the patient is in good health and can be realistic about the outcome of the nose reshaping, then they are considered prime candidates for the nose reshaping. It is also imperative that the patient have completed the growing phase (about fourteen or fifteen in girls) so that the newly shaped nose doesn’t change with further growth. When teenage girls are considering nose reshaping, it is a good idea to ensure that it is something that they truly wish to undergo, and not just as a wish of their parents or as a result of pressure from their friends. Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty) – ConsultationNose cosmetic surgery or nose plastic surgery does have some risks. So, in the initial consultation for nose reshaping, the surgeon will go over the risks that are associated with the surgery. He/she will also discuss the various anesthesia options and methods that can be used. After examining the patient’s nose, the surgeon will be able to assess the needs of the patient and what kind of results can be expected from the nose reshaping. In some cases, implants can be used to alter the nose, while in other cases, the nose will need to be broken in order to be set in a more favorable location. This will depend on the specific patient and the desired outcome. The initial consultation will also examine the patient’s medical history and current physical condition to assess their readiness for a nose reshaping. Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty) – ProcedureThe actual nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) can take place in an outpatient surgical center or a hospital, depending on the extent of the surgery. The procedure normally takes an hour or two, but it may take longer if a more complicated rebuild is needed. General anesthesia is the most commonly used method of anesthesia, but local anesthesia with sedation may also be used—depending on the comfort of the patient. Although many methods of nose reshaping exist, the basic procedure involves the removal of the nose skin in order to rebuild the underlying cartilage and bone--the skin is then repositioned and sewn into place. Some physicians will make incisions within the nostrils, while others put incisions in the skin between the nostrils. When the nose reshaping is complete, a splint is applied to the nose along with nasal packs in the nostrils to support the new shape. Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty) – AftereffectsDuring the first twenty-four hours following the nose reshaping, the patient will feel swollen and puffy. A headache and pain are also common. Many physicians will prescribe oral pain medications to alleviate this discomfort after the nose reshaping. Keeping the head elevated for the first day will aid in relieving the swelling. Some bruising may also appear, reaching its peak within a few days, then slowly disappearing. Cold compresses can help to relieve many of these symptoms. A patient will feel better before they look better in many cases. Within a few weeks, the swelling will subside and the patient will begin to look better. Some bleeding can also occur following the nose reshaping and this is normal. The nasal packing will be removed within a few days and within a week or so, the stitches and other dressings and splints will also be removed. Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty) – RisksAs with any surgery, some risks are to be expected with nose reshaping. These can include infection, nosebleed, and scarring. In some cases, patients may have a reaction to the anesthesia used in the nose reshaping, but this is rare. In very few cases, a second procedure needs to be done in order to correct a flaw in the original nose reshaping. Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty) – Recovery
Although most patients are feeling better within a few days of the nose reshaping, their appearance may not reflect this. It is important that the patient avoid strenuous activities following the nose reshaping for as long as the physician recommends. It is also imperative that the nose area not be rubbed or touched for at least eight weeks. Although most patients find that they can wear contact lenses without any problem, those that wear glasses will have a harder time as the glasses will not be able to touch your nose. The glasses can be taped to the cheeks in this case until the nose is completely healed.
