Mesotherapy - Introduction

Mesotherapy is a very popular procedure in European countries. Using a combination of homeopathic medications, vitamins, and other medicines in a series of personalized microinjections, patients find an improvement in the appearance of cellulite and the fatty deposits in the body. Although, mesotherapy is not indicated for weight loss, patients have reported that they have lost inches from the treatments. Mesotherapy seesm to offer an effective anti-aging solution.

Mesotherapy – How Cellulites Are Formed?

Cellulite is thought to occur when connective tissue is built up between the skin and the muscles—usually in the area below the buttocks and above the back of the knees. This is not to say that cellulite can not appear elsewhere, but this area seems to give patients the most problems. Cellulite has also been said to develop from a build up of fat in the fat cells of the specific area. With the build up of water around these cells, the cellulite forms. As the fat cells grow, the skin gains an ‘orange peel’ appearance. Unfortunately, this entire situation causes a reduced ability to drain off toxins and excess fluids, and this damages the connective tissues. The skin loses the ability to bounce back and it is resistant to improvement by exercise and dietary restrictions. Women are more likely than men to develop cellulite—about 90% of women will have cellulite at some point of their life.

Mesotherapy - Procedure

Considering its bad effects, cellulite has been attacked by various creams and special diets, but they do not seem to have consistent results and need to be continuously used in order to receive the full benefits. In many cases, surface treatments for cellulite temporarily tighten the skin, but the area will return to its original state when use of the treatment is discontinued.

The difference is that mesotherapy works by being injected into the areas affected by the fat deposits. Included in the injections is a combination of Procaine and Aminophylline usually. Procaine is a numbing medication and is thought to increase circulation in the area it is injected into. Aminophylline is used in order to break down fats and increase blood circulation by helping to dilate the blood vessels. Another ingredient in the patient’s specific combination of drugs to be injected into their affected areas may be isoproteranol. This medication works by stimulating the release of insulin that helps to break down fat cells. Vitamin C may also be included in the mesotherapy injections in order to help the area’s tone and texture to improve. Phosphatidyl-choline can also be found in the mesotherapy injections. Sweet clover (melilotus) and thiomucase are homeopathic substances that help to increase stimulation and water loss in the injected area.

A mesotherapy treatment consists of a number of injections of the specially prepared solution into the affected area. Depending on the size of the area to be treated, the injections can number anywhere from twenty to a few hundred. Usually, one injection is made for each inch of area that is affected. There is even a mesotherapy “gun” that can facilitate the proper spacing of injections. No pain is felt with the mesotherapy as some of the ingredients have inherent anesthetic qualities. In some of the more sensitive patients, a topical numbing cream can be used.

Following a mesotherapy treatment, a patient may experience instant increased skin quality. It is recommended that injections are repeated twice a week for anywhere form two to four months—depending on the advice of the physician. In order to maintain the results, it is recommended that mesotherapy is repeated every six to twelve months. Although some patients have reported that the initial mesotherapy treatment regimen had permanent effects and no further treatment was necessary.

Mesotherapy – Risks And Precautions

Mesotherapy is not indicated for those patients that may be pregnant or may become pregnant, those with a history of stroke or heart related problems, bleeding disorders, blood clots, cancer, or diabetes. Significant side effects can result if these conditions are not disclosed prior to undergoing mesotherapy including infections, reactions to the ingredients, bleeding, and kidney issues. Bruising is the most common side effect of mesotherapy. This effect can be heightened with the use of certain medication prior to the treatment and it should be noted that all instructions of the physician/mesotherapy practitioner should be followed prior to and following the treatment.

Mesotherapy – Costs

Mesotherapy is cost-intensive cosmetic therapy. A single sessions can cost $200-600 per visit depending on the size of the area to be treated and the physician performing the procedure. This can add up to thousands of dollars over an entire course of initial and follow up mesotherapy injections.
