Fat Injections - Introduction

Fat injections have been recognized as one of the best surgical procedures to restore a smooth and youthful appearance. Over the years, fat injections have become widely a accepted approach in anti-aging solutions. Fat helps to reduce/eliminate wrinkles; fat injections are safe as they are taken from the patient’s own body, hence, there is no chance of allergic reactions. It can be used in higher volumes. Fat injection scar/wrinkle removal procedure is very effective, yet less complicated than many other rejuvenating procedures. This cosmetic surgery applies to lip, cheek, forehead and also to the buttocks.

The Suitable Candidates For Fat Injections

The best candidates for fat injections include those patients who are dissatisfied with scarring, wrinkling, or sagging of their skin. Or perhaps aging has taken away some of the youthful plumpness of their face contours and they are looking to restore that quality. Patients must be in good physical health and psychologically stable. Physicians and patients will need to discuss the realistic outcomes of the fat injections and come to a compromise that both can agree upon.

Fat Injections – Consultation

During an initial consultation, the patient who wants the fat injections will be asked a series of questions about their medical history. It is imperative that the patient be honest and direct about medical conditions, medications used, if any illegal drug use has been in their history. This is not the time for a patient to be concerned about what their answers might sound like. Very serious side effects can occur when anesthesia and certain drugs are mixed together. Also at the initial consultation, the physician will look at the patient’s skin to see if fat injections are the best course of action. Sometimes, fat injections are not needed and other options will be discussed. If the patient has any questions about the fat injections, this is the time to ask and ask again. The physician may also have ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of previous patients that the prospective patient may be able to examine to see if the results of the fat injections are to their liking. Investigating the physician’s background prior to the initial consultation is also a good idea.

Fat Injections – Procedure

Fat injections are normally performed in two stages. In the first stage, fat is taken from other parts of the patient’s body—usually the lower body or abdomen. After the fat is harvested, the cells are put into a centrifuge which spins at a very fast speed in order to separate the fat cells from extraneous tissues. The fat that is separated is then placed into a large syringe. The fat cells that make up fat injections are much larger than other injectable materials and thus need to be injected deeper within the skin. With the syringe, the fat is then injected into the areas that need to be filled. Fat injections can be given in higher volumes in order to fill an entire face. Depending on the extent of the procedure, fat injections can taken anywhere from fifteen to sixty minutes to administer. Most procedures are done in an outpatient setting, with the patient being able to leave the same day.

Following the fat injections, some patients report mild pain at the injection sites. In many cases, the fat injections are given to the patient without any anesthesia due to the fact that it is not a painful procedure. In some cases, sedation is given in order to relax the patient while the fat injections are given to particular areas—lips, between the nose folds, and cheeks. Pain is relative to the area that is given the injections. Swelling and redness are common in the two days following the fat injections. Itching may also be present as well. If a larger amount of fat is injected into the face, swelling can last up to several weeks. The physician should give the patient an idea of how long this swelling could last.

Fat Injections – Complications

The most common risk associated with fat injections is infection due to the injections. This risk can be minimized with a properly trained physician. Other risks can include asymmetry of the results, but again this should not be the case with an experienced physician. Following a physician’s orders before and after the fat injections will minimize any serious complications. If a patient is concerned about any side effects, he/she should contact their physician immediately.
